1. The smoke pump
3. Extra or unused channel in your RX
4. Tank to use for smoke oil (regular R.C. Fuel Tank)
5. Smoke oil (duh)
Below is a break down for the Smoke System that will be installed on my new CJM F9F Cougar. YOU CAN CLICK ON THE PICTURES TO SEE THE LARGER ONE.
First two pictures show the TME components that make up the smoke. TME Simple smoke Pump II come with two leads. One is for the RX for what ever channel you are going to use. It can be any channel as ATV is not required. Simple toggle switch will do. Second lead is for it's on battery tank.
Well, it's got to come out somewhere? I use Brass tubing inside the tail pipe to release the smoke. You must restrict the flow or too much will come out at once and burn up too much oil quickly. I use and exacto knife as a guide to flatten out the Brass tube. The Oil will burn regardless if you pre-heat it or not, but you will get MORE DENSE smoke if you pre-heat it first. Photo 3, shows one of two tubes that will be installed in this bi-ficurated tail pipe. I insert my brass tube into the tail pipe at the end of the turbine and then just run it along the bottom. I keep the end of the brass tube about an inch inside the tailpipe just to conceal it a bit. Before you ask, that is not the tail pipe for the CJM Cougar, thaT one belongs to a Top Gun F-15.
Last two shot show the Smoke oil I used, Super Dri brand Aviation Smoke oil, not the only kind there is but is what most hobby shops carry around here in southern Cali. Last picture is the whole system set up outside the airframe. The Cougar is not yet ready to fly, so pictures of the actual smoke are going to have to wait a little.
IMPOARTANT THINGS to REMEMBER. You will have to use fuel tubing that can stand up to gas engines so for the most part that means Tygon tubing (I have only seen it in yellow) for all your lines and in the clunk of the tank. Keep the smoke pump AWAY from the receiver and RX ANTENNA. Before you fly the plane do a complete range check. That means 1. With just the RX and TX turned on. 2. Second one with RX, TX and Turbine running at both idle and full power. 3. One last one with the RX, TX, Turbine and Smoke system on at idle and full power. MAKE SURE the smoke pump does not reduce the range check when turned on.
CLASS DISMISSED.
